Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship
About the Program
The goal of the University of Miami Medical School Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program is to inspire and train the next generation of biomedical researchers and physician-scientists, and to maximize the talents and intellectual contributions from a diverse scientific and biomedical workforce towards reducing the burden of human disease.
Our 10-week program immerses students from diverse backgrounds in hands-on and innovative biomedical research in the laboratories of our exceptional faculty members across multiple research disciplines, including tumor biology, genetics and epigenetics, neuroscience, microbiology, immunology, physiology, pharmacology, biochemistry, cell biology, epidemiology and public health. In addition to an intensive research experience, our SURF fellows benefit from a full schedule of career development sessions, including learning how to write effectively, critical reading of scientific literature, scientific ethics and appropriate conduct, as well as opportunities to shadow physicians at the University of Miami hospitals and our NCI-designated Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. SURF fellows are also introduced to the spectrum of research-oriented higher degree-granting programs offered at the Medical School, including our Program in Biomedical Sciences PhD program, our NIH T32-funded MD/PhD program, and several Masters programs.
