Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)
The SURF Program offers participants the opportunity to choose from our Biomedical Sciences Programs, including Bacterial Pathogenesis, Cancer Biology, Gene Expression/Molecular Genetics, Immunology, Neuroscience, and Stem Cell/Regenerative Medicine.
We introduce undergraduate students to projects experienced during postgraduate research training. This lends to an understanding of the planning, discipline, and teamwork involved in the pursuit of basic answers to current questions in the biological sciences. In addition to laboratory experience, SURF students will participate in seminars and workshops.
This program is ideal for students who are interested in pursuing a career in lab-based non-clinical research. Fellows will gain experience in modern research techniques, and have an opportunity to plan and execute an experimental strategy to answer a scientific question.
Fellows will spend 10 weeks pursuing research under the mentorship of a Principal Investigator (PI) or their designee. Students are paired with a UMMSM faculty member based on their research interests. SURF participants receive a stipend. Students residing further than sixty miles from the medical campus will be provided dormitory housing on main campus.
We invite you to apply to this selective opportunity to immerse yourself in biomedical research on South Florida’s leading research campus. Even better, you will experience Miami — an international epicenter of culture and the gateway to Latin America.
