How to Apply

Admission to the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) is highly competitive and interested applicants are advised to apply by early fall. The first step in the application process is to indicate to the American Medical College Admissions Services (AMCAS) that you want your medical school application sent to UM. On that application, be sure to indicate that you want to be considered for the MD/PhD program. AMCAS applications must be received at the Office of Admissions at the UM MSoM no later than December 1st.

Upon receipt at our school, your AMCAS file will be reviewed. If you meet the qualifications for consideration, you will be sent instructions on how to submit the Medical School and MSTP’s secondary application on-line along with a passport sized photo of yourself. Secondary applications are due by January 15th. All applicants to the MSTP must fulfill the academic requirements of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Please be sure to visit the Miller School of Medicine Admissions website.

The completed MSTP application should contain a research narrative and two letters of recommendation from scientists who specifically address their potential as a physician scientist. One of these must come from a scientist with whom the student performed research. Composite evaluations from a premedical advisory committee cannot be substituted for these letters. Letters of recommendation should be submitted through AMCAS. All other supporting documents, such as scientific publications, can be mailed to the MSTP Office. Even if you expect to qualify for the program with your scores from a future MCAT exam, you should submit the MSTP application and the secondary application as soon as possible. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required for matriculation.

MSTP applicants are reviewed by the MD and the MSTP Admissions Committees. These evaluations proceed independently and a student will still be considered for the MD program, even if they are declined admission to the MSTP. A successful applicant is granted admission to both the MD Program and the MSTP.

Selected applicants will be invited to campus for interviews during an MSTP Interview Day. You will have a chance to meet with members of the MSTP Admissions Committee, selected faculty, MSTP Directors and MSTP students.
