Universtiy of Miami Miller School of Medicine Graduate Studies

BGSG Events

The BGSG hosts numerous educational and social events throughout the year for biomedical graduate students. Below are some highlights from previous years.

Annual Biomedical Graduate Student Research Symposium and Distinguished Lecturer

Graduate students have the opportunity to present their research at a poster session followed by a keynote address given by an invited speaker. Previous guest lecturers include: Dr. Jonathan Pritchard (Stanford University, Genetics and Biology). The 2nd one is coming up!

Research Intersections

Graduate students from all three campuses (Coral Gables, RSMAS, and Medical) give presentations with the purpose of uncovering commonalities in research methodologies across disciplines.

Coffee and Donuts Sessions

Besides eating coffee and donuts, BGSG members and fellow grad students convene to discuss various ‘hot’ topics related to graduate school and science. Previous topics include: gender in science, the life of a postdoc in academia and industry, how to deal with lab dynamics and different lab personalities, time management, how to talk to non-scientists, how to project confidence in the scientific world, and lab tips and tricks.

Pizza Lunches

Graduate students can take a break from their hectic schedule to eat free pizza and socialize with their fellow peers.

BBQs at Crandon

What is better than spending a couple of hours on a Saturday or Sunday forgetting about lab and relaxing on the beach, playing volleyball, spending time with friends, and eating free BBQ? Enough said!

Graduate Student Seminar Series

Grad students and postdocs have the chance to get feedback from their peers on their presentation for an oral presentation they have to give whether it’s for departmental seminar, journal club, rotation talk, or a conference.

Grad Student Happy Hours

Grad students and postdocs get together to mingle for several hours at various locations around Miami. Great for seeing new places, getting to know new people, and networking!

Ronald McDonald House Dinners

Graduate students volunteer to cook dinner for the residents of the on-campus Ronald McDonald house.
