Biomedical Sciences Masters

In order to be admitted to the Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences (MiBS) at the University of Miami, a student must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and sufficient undergraduate coursework in the areas of biological sciences, physical sciences, medicine, agricultural sciences, or chemical sciences. Individuals with industrial work experience and prospective medical students who wish to earn a Master’s degree before applying to medical school are highly encouraged to apply for this program. Students with majors in the arts or humanities are also welcome, as long as they have taken some of the prerequisite science courses.
Course requirements mirror the prerequisites for applicants to UM’s Miller School of Medicine.
Competitive candidates will have the following:
- Excellent academic record (minimum overall cumulative GPA = 3.0)
- Competitive GRE or MCAT exam scores (The GRE is required for all tracks, though the MCAT or other industry-specific exam scores can be submitted in lieu of the GRE with prior consent from the program.)
- Strong letters of recommendation
- Motivation to pursue state-of-the-art biomedical research or a career in medicine

The BioMed Centralized Application Service (BioMedCAS) welcomes applicants to use a single online application and one set of materials to apply to multiple programs at participating schools. All applicants to must apply online through BioMedCAS.
Note that only complete applications will be considered.

BioMedCAS charges $95 for the first program you apply to and $45 for each additional program. Please note that application fees are non-refundable.
Qualified applicants who are US citizens or permanent residents with documented membership in approved programs or documented financial need may request an application fee waiver. The following are examples of qualifications:

Applicants who wish to be considered for a fee waiver must complete the Fee Waiver Request Form, submit a copy of their latest 1040, 1040EZ or 4506T-EZ tax form and documentation of scholarship or volunteer participation. Please submit waiver form and required documents to email@example.com .
US and Canadian Transcripts
ALL official academic records including degree and certificate programs, English language programs, and incomplete coursework / degrees from all previously attended colleges and universities must be sent directly from each institution. Note that applicants with Canadian transcripts using French grading systems should follow the international transcript instructions below.
Electronic transcripts are preferred and should be sent following the BiomedCAS instructions for Credential Solutions, Parchment or National Student Clearinghouse.

Applicants who have attended institutions outside of the US and Canada are required to submit all official transcripts, mark sheets and a photocopy of their diploma(s) (with English translation when applicable). All post-secondary / university transcripts must be accompanied by a course-by-course transcript evaluation with GPA from the World Education Service (Select ICAP Report). BiomedCAS requires that an unofficial transcript be uploaded for each international institution. Please note that you must still send the official translation and evaluation to complete your application.
Official transcripts with translation and credential evaluation must be received before an application will be reviewed.

GRE General Test / MCAT Scores
If you have completed the GRE or MCAT exam(s) already, you may enter your unofficial score(s) in your online application while waiting for the official scores to be delivered.
Please indicate your expected test date on the application.
Submit your Official GRE Scores. Request that your score be sent electronically to “University of Miami BiomedCAS”, institution code 4090.
To submit your Official MCAT Scores, you must log into your AMCAS account. Navigate to the “My Reports” drop-down menu and select “Print Score Report”. This report includes a verification code that you (and anyone you send the report to) can use to verify the report’s authenticity. Anyone with the verification code can securely retrieve a copy of that report via the Web. Email your score report to firstname.lastname@example.org.
English Proficiency Exams
International students whose native language is not English are required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores. This requirement is waived for applicants who have successfully completed 30 consecutive credits at the university level where English was the language of instruction or those who have passed the USMLEs. Test scores must be less than two years old.
TOEFL: When registering for the test, please request that your score be sent to University of Miami, institution code B765. The minimum score is 80.
IELTS: When registering for the test, please request that your score be sent to University of Miami, institution code 4862. The minimum score is 6.5.
Statement of Purpose and Objectives
Your personal essay is intended to give you the opportunity to submit a narrative discussing your past education, experience, and current professional career objectives. Your statement of purpose should describe your:
- Reasons for interest in your application degree
- Your specific area(s) of research/professional interest in your application degree
- Career goals including how you hope to contribute to biomedical research
- Reasons for interest in the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine
Research and Shadowing Experience
Applicants must enter all their shadowing and research experiences in the “Experiences” section of the online application.
All applicants must submit a complete, up-to-date resume / CV that includes all employment, shadowing, research experience, community service, education and academic or professional honors. Be sure to detail all experience related to the discipline you are applying to including research experience, training, education or other related qualifications with bulleted summaries. You will be asked to upload a PDF of your resume in the “Program Materials” section of your application.
Additionally, in the “Program Questions” section, applicants are asked to discuss their most significant shadowing and research experience.
Letters of Recommendation
All applicants are required to submit three letters of recommendation from those who are best able to assess your ability to be successful in a graduate degree program. Ideally, your recommenders are university faculty or employers in a related research or scientific field. Applicants should request that their recommender write a letter that is specific to the discipline for which they are applying. Form letters and recommendations written for medical school applications contribute little to your application and are strongly discouraged.
You will be asked for your recommenders’ contact information in BiomedCAS. They will be sent an online form to complete via email. Applicants must submit a minimum of three to a maximum of five recommendations.
After initial committee review of complete applications, select applicants will be invited for Skype interviews.
